What is a clipper? Loudness without the pumping

A clipper does not turn peaks down. It cuts them off. Anything above the ceiling is flattened, and the level of everything below stays exactly where it was.

That single difference explains everything about how clippers behave, why they preserve punch, and why they distort.

Clipping versus limiting, in one picture

Imagine a drum hit whose transient is 5 dB above the rest of the mix.

A limiter sees the transient and reduces the gain of everything for a moment so the peak fits under the ceiling. The waveform keeps its shape, but the whole mix ducks briefly. Do that on every hit and the mix breathes with the drums.

A clipper removes the top 5 dB of that transient and leaves everything else untouched. Nothing ducks. The mix stays still. In exchange, the flattened waveform now contains harmonics that were not there before — which is distortion.

Neither is better. They fail in different directions, which is why most loud masters use both.

Hard clipping and soft clipping

Hard clipping flattens the waveform abruptly at the ceiling. The corner is sharp, which produces strong high-order harmonics — audible as a brittle, aggressive edge. It is very effective at removing transient peaks and very obvious when overdone.

Soft clipping rounds the transition into the ceiling. The harmonic profile is gentler and closer to what analogue circuits do, so it reads as warmth rather than as damage. It removes less peak level for the same setting.

Many clippers offer a shape or knee control between the two. Start soft, move harder only if you need more peak reduction than the soft setting gives.

The relationship to saturation is close — see what is saturation — because both work by adding harmonics through non-linear behaviour. A clipper is simply the most abrupt version of that idea.

Where a clipper goes

Before the limiter, on a master chain. The clipper takes the sharpest transients off so the limiter barely has to move. This is the standard arrangement and it is why clipped masters can be loud without pumping.

On individual percussive sources. A kick or snare that spikes far above its own body is a good clipping candidate, because the transient is short enough that the added harmonics are masked by the hit itself.

Not after the final limiter. Anything after the limiter can push the signal back above the ceiling the limiter just enforced.

How to set one without hearing it

  1. Start with the ceiling where you want the peaks to stop.
  2. Raise the input gain slowly while watching how much is being clipped.
  3. Listen specifically to sustained low-frequency content — bass notes reveal clipping distortion long before drums do.
  4. When you first hear grit or a hard edge, back off until it disappears.
  5. Compare bypassed at matched level. The clipped version should sound the same but sit lower on the peak meter.

The useful mental model: you are looking for the amount that removes peak level without changing tone. That amount is often smaller than expected, and it is still enough to make a real difference to how hard you can push the limiter.

Why low frequencies show it first

A bass note is a long, smooth waveform. Flatten its top and you have changed a large, audible portion of a periodic signal, so the added harmonics sit right where the ear can follow them.

A snare transient lasts a few milliseconds. Flatten its top and the added harmonics are brief and masked by the hit’s own broadband energy.

Clipping is not an accident any more

The word carries a stigma from converter clipping and red meters, which are genuine problems. A dedicated clipper is different: it is a controlled non-linearity applied where you choose, usually with oversampling to avoid aliasing.

The distinction that matters:

  • Accidental clipping happens because something ran out of headroom. It is uncontrolled, and it happens at whatever point in the chain you lost track of level.
  • Deliberate clipping happens at a stage you chose, at an amount you set, on material you selected for it.
