What is headroom, and why do you need it?

Headroom is the space between your loudest peak and the ceiling. It is room to work — and running out of it is the most common reason a mix stops responding to the things you do to it.
Why it matters, honestly
Some of the advice around headroom is folklore. Here is what is actually true.
True: plugins behave differently at different levels. Any processor with a fixed threshold — many compressors, saturators and emulations — reacts to absolute level. Feed one a signal 10 dB hotter than it expects and it does something different, whether or not you asked it to.
True: you need somewhere to put the next stage. Every bus sums signals and raises level. If a channel is already at the ceiling, the bus has nowhere to go, and neither do you.
True: mastering needs room. A mix delivered squashed against the ceiling gives the mastering stage nothing to work with, and forces a limiter to fix a problem that was avoidable.
Mostly myth: 32-bit float mixing damages the signal internally. Modern DAWs have vast internal headroom, so summing itself is not where the damage happens. The damage happens at fixed-threshold plugins and at the output.
Where headroom disappears
Almost always in the same three places.
Summing. Eight drum channels into a bus produce a signal much hotter than any one of them. Four buses into a master do it again.
Boosts. Every EQ boost, every makeup gain, every saturator adds level. Six small boosts across a chain is not small.
Habit. Everything creeps up because turning things up sounds better than turning things down — even when the result is the same balance, louder.
How to keep it
Set levels down, not up. If the vocal is too quiet against the drums, turn the drums down. It is the same relationship, with more room.
Compensate every processor. If a plugin makes the signal louder, use its output gain to bring it back. This also makes bypass comparisons honest, which matters more than the headroom itself — see use less, in the right order.

Check the master occasionally. Not obsessively — but if it is red, find out where the level came from rather than pulling the master fader and moving on.
How much to leave before mastering
A few decibels below full scale, with no limiter on the master bus.
Do not agonise over the exact figure. What matters is:
- the mix is not clipping;
- nothing on the master is already limiting;
- the balance is right;
- there is room for the mastering stage to work.

Recovering headroom you have lost
If everything is too hot:
- Do not pull individual faders. That changes the balance you worked on.
- Pull all the bus outputs by the same amount, or put a gain utility on the master and lower it.
- Lowering everything equally changes nothing musically. The balance is relative.
- Then check any fixed-threshold plugins, because they are now receiving less and will behave differently. Re-tune those thresholds.
That last step is why it is easier to keep headroom than to recover it.
Headroom is not the same as dynamic range
Two different things, often confused.
- Headroom — space above your loudest peak.
- Dynamic range — distance between the quietest and loudest parts of the music.
A brick-walled master can have 1 dB of headroom and almost no dynamic range. A gentle mix can have 6 dB of headroom and enormous dynamic range. Managing one does not manage the other.
Dynamic range is the subject of how loud should your master be.

- Leave room at every stage, not just the master.
- Turn down rather than up.
- Compensate every processor’s output.
- A few decibels below the ceiling before mastering is plenty.
- If you have run out, lower everything equally rather than fixing it at the end.
Headroom is not a sound-quality issue in a modern DAW. It is a workflow issue — and it is the difference between a mix you can still change and a mix that has stopped responding.
