How to make cyberpunk music: sound, structure and atmosphere

Cyberpunk music lives in a contradiction: warm analogue synthesis degraded by digital damage. Rich, human-sounding pads running through processing that sounds like a failing machine.

Get that tension right and everything else — tempo, key, arrangement — follows from it. Get it wrong and you have either clean retro synthwave or unfocused noise.

The core sound palette

Bass

Deep and simple. A sine or triangle sub carrying the weight, often with a second layer providing the character.

The genre lives in the low end, and that means small speakers are a real problem. Keep the sub clean and generate harmonics on a separate band so the bass survives a phone — the method is in how to saturate bass.

Pads

Detuned saws, slow filter movement, long release. The pad is the atmosphere, and it should evolve rather than sit still.

Modulate something slowly: filter cutoff, detune amount, a phaser’s rate. Movement over 8 or 16 bars, not over one.

Leads

Plucked or arpeggiated, drenched in tempo-synced delay. A short, dry lead sound becomes a genre-defining part purely through the delay and the space around it.

Keep them sparse. A lead that plays constantly removes the emptiness the genre depends on.

Textures

The layer that does the most work and gets the least attention. Distant metallic resonance, filtered noise, granular fragments, processed field recordings.

Drums

Restrained. Often a heavy kick, a sharp snare or clap, and very little else.

Programmed drums with too much detail fight the atmosphere. Space in the drum pattern is what lets everything else feel large.

The processing that defines it

Degradation, applied selectively

Bitcrushing, sample-rate reduction, digital clipping, aliasing. Machine damage.

The rule that separates deliberate from broken: degrade some layers, not all. A clean sub with a bitcrushed mid layer sounds intentional. A bitcrushed sub sounds like a mistake.

Try it on a duplicate and blend — parallel degradation gives you the artefacts without losing the source.

Spectral processing

Freezing, blurring and smearing a spectrum produces textures that no filter can reach. Freeze a pad chord and let it hang under the arrangement; blur a lead so it becomes an atmosphere.

Saturation

Warmth against the digital damage. This is the other half of the contradiction — without it, degraded sounds are just harsh. What is saturation covers the choice between warm and aggressive harmonic character.

Space

Long reverbs, tempo-synced delays, wide stereo. The genre needs to sound enormous.

Filter the tails aggressively or the mix turns to fog. A long reverb high-passed at 400 Hz sounds vast; the same reverb unfiltered sounds like mud. Modulation

Arrangement: what to leave out

The genre is defined more by absence than by density.

Space between events. A single lead note allowed to decay for four bars carries more atmosphere than a busy melody.

Long sections. Cyberpunk tracks tend to develop slowly. Let a pad establish before anything else arrives.

Few elements at once. Three or four things playing, with one of them dominant. Density is a tool for a specific moment, not a default state.

Silence as an event. Dropping everything except the sub for two bars is one of the genre’s strongest devices.

The key and register

Minor keys and modes are conventional because they suit the atmosphere, but register matters more than key.

Write low. Leave the upper midrange mostly empty except for the lead and the textures. The emptiness in the 1–4 kHz region is a large part of why the genre sounds spacious rather than busy — see making music in a key for how the key choice affects where the low end lands.

Mixing it

The genre’s mixing challenges are specific:

  • Enormous low end that must survive small speakers. Clean sub, saturated body band.
  • Heavy space that must not become mud. Filter every return hard.
  • Degraded layers that must not become fatiguing. Blend parallel rather than processing in series.
  • Wide stereo that must survive mono. Keep the sub mono and check correlation.

That last one is where a lot of atmospheric tracks fall apart. Check in mono early — mixing by meters vs by ear covers which checks are genuinely worth doing with a display.

A starting point

  1. Write a sparse chord progression in a minor key, low register, long notes.
  2. Add a clean sub bass following the roots.
  3. Add a pad with slow filter movement, filtered and placed wide.
  4. Add a texture layer, quiet, evolving, from a processed source.
  5. Add drums last, and use fewer than feel right.
  6. Add a lead only where the arrangement needs a focal point.
  7. Degrade one or two layers in parallel.
  8. Put everything through two shared, heavily filtered reverbs.

Then remove something. The version with one fewer element is usually the better one, which is true generally but is close to a genre rule here — use less, in the right order.
