Muddy reverb? This is how to use it the right way

Reverb does not make a mix muddy. Unfiltered, undelayed, unducked reverb does. The problem is almost never that there is too much reverb — it is that the reverb is present in frequencies and at moments where it should not be.
Why reverb turns into mud
Three things happen at once.
Low frequencies accumulate. A reverb tail sustains energy over time. Feed it low-mid content and that content is now present continuously rather than in short bursts. The 200–500 Hz region fills up and stays full.
The tail arrives immediately. With no pre-delay, the reverb starts at the same instant as the sound. The transient and the reverb of the transient overlap, and the source loses definition at the exact moment it needed it most.
It never gets out of the way. The reverb of the previous word is still sounding while the next word starts, so every syllable is heard over the tail of the last one.
Each of those has a direct fix.
Fix 1: filter the return
The single highest-value move, and the one most often skipped.
High-pass the reverb. Somewhere between 200 Hz and 500 Hz depending on the source. A vocal reverb rarely needs anything below 300 Hz. You are not making the space smaller — you are removing the part of it that only causes buildup.
Low-pass it too. Real rooms absorb high frequencies as sound travels, so a tail with a rolled-off top sounds more like a space and less like a sheen layered over the mix. Rolling off above 6–10 kHz usually helps the reverb sit behind rather than on top.

Fix 2: use pre-delay
Pre-delay is the gap between the dry sound and the arrival of the reverb.
With a short gap, the attack of the sound reaches the listener cleanly, and the space appears just after. The result is a source that stays articulate and sounds like it is somewhere.
For vocals, enough pre-delay to let a syllable start dry makes a large difference to intelligibility. Set it by ear: increase until the words feel clear, and stop before the reverb detaches into an obvious echo.
Pre-delay timed to the tempo — a sixteenth or an eighth — often sits more musically, because the tail arrives on a beat rather than at a random moment.
Fix 3: duck the reverb
Let the reverb reduce while the source is playing and return in the gaps.
The result is a vocal that sounds dry and present while singing, surrounded by a space that blooms between phrases. You get the size without the smear.
Do it with a compressor on the return keyed from the source, or with a dynamic EQ so only the frequency range the source needs is reduced. Full detail in ducking to create space in a mix.
Fix 4: shorten it
A long tail in a dense arrangement is fog. In a sparse one it is space.
Before reaching for a longer decay, ask what the reverb is for. Depth and distance come mostly from filtering, pre-delay and level. Decay time is about the size of the room, and most mixes need less room than the impulse response suggests.
A short, filtered reverb at a noticeable level usually reads as more professional than a long one buried quietly.
Fix 5: fewer spaces
Four instruments through four different reverbs is four different rooms, and the listener hears a collage rather than a place.
Two or three shared returns is usually the right number:

Fewer spaces, shared by more sources, is what makes a mix sound like one recording.
The diagnostic
If the mix is muddy and you suspect the reverb:
- Mute every reverb return. Does the mud disappear? Now you know.
- Unmute one at a time and listen to the low mids specifically.
- On the offender, sweep a high-pass filter up until the mud clears. Note how little space you lose.
- Add pre-delay and listen to whether the source becomes clearer.
- Add ducking if the source still fights the tail.
- Only then consider reducing the send level.
Most of the time you never reach step 6. The reverb amount was fine; its content was not.
Reverb is not the only source of mud

Where reverb belongs in the chain
Last on a channel, or on a send instead. Anything after reverb processes the tail: compress after reverb and the tail pumps with the source, saturate after reverb and the tail distorts. See effects chain order.
