Fixing weak mixes with EQ and sound hierarchy

A weak mix is rarely missing processing. It is missing a decision.
When every element is full-range, full-bodied and equally loud, none of them stands out — not because they are quiet, but because they are all competing for the same attention at the same moment.
The fix is a hierarchy, and then EQ used to enforce it.
Step 1: decide who matters
Take a section of the song — the chorus is usually the hardest — and rank the elements.
- The one thing. If a listener remembers one element from this section, what should it be? Usually the vocal, the lead or the hook.
- The foundation. What holds it up? Usually kick and bass.
- The support. Everything else.
Write it down. Three tiers, in order. This takes two minutes and it changes every decision that follows.
The common failure is refusing to rank. Everything you spent time on feels important, so everything stays loud, and the result is a wall.
Step 2: assign the ranges
Then decide who owns each part of the spectrum. One owner per range per moment.

Step 3: enforce it with cuts, not boosts
This is where the EQ finally comes in, and the direction matters.
Cut the supporting elements in the ranges owned by the important ones. Boosting the important element raises the total energy in a contested range without changing who wins it — the masking is still there, just louder.
Practical moves:
- High-pass everything that does not need low end. Most instruments do not.
- Cut the low mids on supporting elements. Guitars, pads and keys usually have more there than the song needs.
- Cut the vocal’s range on whatever is competing with it, not on the vocal.
- Leave the important elements as untouched as possible.
The result is that the lead sounds louder without being louder, and the mix gains headroom instead of losing it.
Step 4: check that the hierarchy is audible
Play the section at low volume. Whatever survives at low volume is what your mix is actually about.
If the thing that survives is not the thing you ranked first, the hierarchy is not yet enforced. Go back to step three.

The diagnostic for “something is buried”
Do not start by boosting the buried element.
- Mute elements one at a time until the buried one appears.
- The one that made the difference is your target — and it is often not the one you expected.
- Cut that element where the buried one lives, or move it in another dimension entirely — see creating space in a mix.
When EQ is the wrong answer
Be honest about these, because EQ cannot fix them.
Same octave, same rhythm. Two parts playing the same notes at the same time cannot be separated by frequency, because they occupy the same frequencies. That is an arrangement fix.
Wrong sound. A pad that needs six bands of correction is the wrong pad. A different sound takes thirty seconds and needs none.
Too many elements. If eight things play in every section, no hierarchy will survive. Mute two and listen — the mix usually gets stronger.
The performance. A hesitant part will not become confident through processing.
Why this makes a mix sound “bigger”
Counter-intuitively, a mix sounds bigger when elements are made smaller.
Cutting the low mids from five supporting instruments does not shrink the mix — it removes the buildup that was crowding the important elements, so those can be heard fully at the same level. Everything gains definition, and there is more headroom for the mastering stage.
That is why professional mixes often contain more subtraction than addition.

Why does my mix sound weak?
Usually because too many elements compete for the same frequency ranges and the same level, so nothing stands out. A weak mix is generally an undecided mix rather than an under-processed one.
What is sound hierarchy in mixing?
Deciding which elements are most important and giving them priority in level, frequency range and position. Everything else supports them. Without a hierarchy, every element gets treated as equally important and the result is flat.
How do I decide which element owns a frequency range?
Pick the element the song depends on in that range and let it keep the energy there. Reduce the same range on the supporting elements. In the low end that is usually the kick or the bass, and it should not be both.
Why does boosting not make a mix stronger?
Because boosting raises the total energy in a range without changing the relationship between the elements inside it. If two sources are masking each other, both getting louder changes nothing.
How much EQ should a weak mix need?
Less than you expect once the hierarchy is set. If a mix needs aggressive EQ on many channels, the problem is usually the arrangement or the sound selection instead.
